A lane is one place, person or fixed offset you keep track of. Tap the plus in the dock at the bottom of the screen, then choose one of three routes: search the 312 locations bundled with the app, pick someone from your contacts, or pin a fixed offset such as UTC.

Then rename the lane to whatever you actually call it. Mom. Anya. The Tokyo team.

The home lane is your own. It is the clock the rest of the screen is measured against: the now line, the date in the header band and the time a scrub settles on are all read in the home lane’s wall clock, not in any other lane’s.

You can make any lane the home lane from the lane list.

The list icon opens the lane list, where you rename, reorder, delete and set the home lane. The middle control is Now, which returns the timeline to the present. The plus adds a lane.

Drag anywhere on the screen. Every lane moves together, so the same instant is always on the same line across all of them. Let go and the timeline settles on a clean time.

Pinch to change how much time the lanes cover. The header band always states the span it is currently drawing, so it cannot claim eighteen hours while showing three days.

To return to the present, tap Now in the dock. Under VoiceOver the same thing is available as the “Return to now” action.

As many as you want. An iPhone shows four at a time, an iPad several more side by side, and the row scrolls sideways for the rest.

A place lane is a location, so it has a real latitude and longitude and gets real daylight drawn into it.

A person lane is someone you picked from your contacts, tied to the time zone you choose for them.

A fixed offset is a number of hours from UTC and nothing else. It is not anywhere, so it has no sunrise.

Because UTC is not a place. A fixed-offset lane has no coordinate, so there is no honest sunrise or sunset to draw. Meridian marks it with a diagonal hatch and the words “No sun” rather than shading it and inventing a daylight it does not have.

Each lane has its own working hours, set in that lane’s local clock, along with which weekdays count. The default is 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. A green rail runs down the lane wherever they fall.

Switch working hours off for a lane and it stops making a claim about reachability. In daylight it simply reads “Daytime”.

There are five: Night, Early, Working hours, Evening and Day off. Each one is worked out from that lane’s real daylight and its own working hours.

Two more appear where none of the five would be truthful: “Daytime” for a place with working hours switched off, and “No sun” for a fixed offset.

Into the private database of your own iCloud account. There is no Meridian account to create and no server we operate, so there is nowhere else for them to go. We cannot read them.

Check three things. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account. iCloud Drive must be on. And both need a network connection at some point, because a device with no signal has nothing to sync through.

Sync is not instant. iCloud signals the other device that a change is waiting, and the other device then fetches it, so give it a moment before assuming it failed. If it still does not arrive, email us.

No. Meridian works with iCloud off or with no account signed in. Your lanes stay on the one device, and nothing else changes.

Through iCloud, the same way the iPad does. The watch is not fed by the phone sitting next to it, so a watch that is not signed in to the same Apple Account will not see your lanes.

Hazard is what Meridian calls a coming clock change. It looks ahead 21 days in every lane and marks the next daylight saving transition it finds, with one sentence saying what changes and who it affects.

This is the mistake that quietly costs people meetings: the gap between two lanes moves by an hour, and nothing on a normal clock warns you.

That is expected. Meridian reports the next transition in each lane, not every transition inside the window. The second one appears once the first has passed.

They are computed on your device from solar geometry, not fetched from anywhere. The app’s 58 automated tests check the results against published almanac tables and require them to land within 120 seconds.

Every real sunrise and sunset carries a hairline and a time chip. Civil twilight does not, because it is a gradual ramp rather than a moment.

It is drawn as it really is. Polar night and midnight sun are handled, and so is the awkward case in between: a summer night where the sun sets but never gets far enough below the horizon for full darkness. Those nights are drawn as twilight rather than night, and both horizon crossings are still marked.

Four Home Screen widget kinds, ranging from a single lane to a full timeline, in sizes up to extra large. There are Lock Screen widgets and a Control Center control as well.

Touch and hold the widget, choose Edit Widget, and pick the lanes you want. You do not have to open the app to change it.

Leave the selection empty and the widget shows all your lanes, in the order you arranged them.

Four families: circular, corner, rectangular and inline. The circular and corner ones show the first lane that is not your home lane, on the principle that a one-slot surface should tell you someone else’s time rather than repeat your own. The rectangular one shows up to four lanes at once.

Which lanes travel to the wrist is chosen on the watch face itself, the same way a widget is configured.

Yes. Lanes are exposed through App Intents, so they work with Siri and can be used as steps in Shortcuts.

Nothing. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party tracking code in the app. We do not run a server for it to report to.

The two places we ever receive anything are obvious and voluntary: if you type your address into the newsletter form, or if you email us. Both are described in the Privacy Policy.

Only so it can add an event you asked it to add, when you pick a moment on the timeline and choose Add to Calendar. The access is write-only by design. Meridian cannot read your calendar, cannot list your events and never tries to.

Decline it and everything else in the app still works.

It does not ask up front. When you make a person lane, Meridian opens the system contact picker, which hands back only the one contact you tapped. The app never gets your address book.

Fully, including in airplane mode. The 312 locations are bundled in the app, and every sunrise, sunset, twilight, working-hours and clock-change calculation happens on your device. The only network traffic Meridian is responsible for is iCloud sync, between your device and Apple.

Yes. Each lane is a single element that speaks one plain sentence: who it is, what time it is there, and whether you can reach them. The drawing itself is hidden from VoiceOver, because the lane already says everything the drawing means.

“Return to now” and “Choose this moment” are named actions on the timeline, so neither one depends on a drag gesture.

Yes. The app’s text uses system text styles and grows with your setting, and the timeline recalculates its layout around the taller type rather than letting the now line drift off the band it names.

Two places keep fixed sizes on purpose: labels drawn inside the timeline graphic, and the small cells in widgets. Scaling those would break the drawing they sit in.

You should not have to. Nothing in Meridian is carried by hue alone. Every tinted element also has a symbol, a written label and a spoken sentence, and the sunless lanes are marked by texture rather than a shade of gray.

With Differentiate Without Color turned on, the working-hours rail also picks up a dashed texture.

The palette was designed against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast targets, in both light and dark appearance, including the red now line over every band it can cross.

To be straight about it: no external audit has been run, so that is a design target we hold ourselves to and not a certification. If you find something that fails it, tell us and it gets fixed.
